A couple from Wadena are recovering from minor injuries after their horse-drawn buggy was struck by a 42-year-old woman from Deer Creek was driving a S-U-V Wednesday morning southwest of Wadena.

Ottertail County Sheriff’s Office responded after a 2018 Ford Explorer traveling eastbound on County Highway 50, crested a hill approximately a ½ mile east of 580th Ave.

Upon cresting the hill, the driver encountered an Amish horse drawn buggy in the driving lane at the bottom of the hill, also traveling eastbound on County Highway 50 but naturally traveling at a much slower speed.

The SUV Driver braked swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid collision, road conditions were slippery due to ice and wet snow, and struck the buggy with the right side of her vehicle.

The buggy’s passenger compartment and horse along with running gear were separated from the impact and the buggy with its occupants overturned on the road.

The two received superficial injuries and were taken from the scene by Tri County Ambulance to Tri County Hospital in Wadena for further evaluation.

Driver and passenger from the S-U-V were not injured.

Road conditions at the time were very slippery due to wet snow falling earlier that morning, and certainly were a contributing factor in the crash.

The sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Deer Creek Fire and Rescue and Tri County Ambulance.
